** Marathon Middle/High School & Community Updates **
************************************************
POSTED 3/20/17

IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP PARENTS AND STUDENTS INFORMED,
MHS HAS STARTED A FACEBOOK PAGE THAT HAS FREQUENT UPDATES . . .
Please request to be added to the page called “Marathon High School-Home of the Dolphins”.

MARK YOU CALENDARS . . .
The Dolphin Showcase will be Wednesday, March 22 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the gym.  Students will be able to pick up their schedule cards, look at the core class recommendations, and then choose electives.  Teachers will be there to talk about next year’s classes and offer suggestions.  Clubs will also be showcased.
Schedule cards signed by parents or guardians will be due on Friday, March 25, 2017.   Please return the schedule cards to the front office.

The 8th grade students will be participating in their Dancing Classrooms Culminating Wednesday, March 29th in the Marathon Middle/High School Auditorium.  Letters were sent home this week with specifics.  We are in need of donations of cans of soda and bottled water, parent volunteers to help with refreshments and to help tie ties, and someone to take photos before and during the event.  If anyone can donate beverages or would like to volunteer they can Dr. Belotti at Christina.belotti@keysschools.com .  Soda and water can be dropped off in the main office with her name on it beginning after spring break.

Attached is some good information on applying for financial aid and grants shared from the Coral Shores High School website.

The Educational Coalition for Monroe County, (ECMC), a 501(3) c educational charity that serves youth in Monroe County is looking for volunteers (adults and juniors/seniors) to join the start line team for the 7 Mile Bridge Run on April 1st 5:50-8:30am.  The event is sponsored by the Runner’s Club in Marathon and provides donations to nonprofits that serve at the event. Our donation this year will benefit students in special circumstances addressing the needs of a growing population of children hurt by the cost of living in the Keys.  Volunteers receive a t-shirt and an invitation to the volunteer appreciation party.

Please see “3 to Succeed” Flyer regarding literacy awards

Attached is MHS Graduation 2017 information

Marathon Writes – Are you one of the secret writers that Dr. Lancaster talked about who enjoy writing but keep it for yourself? Now’s the time to bring your creativity and stories, poems, graphic novel stories, or plays into the sunlight by entering them in Marathon Writes. Whether you’re starting from scratch on an entry or giving a jolt to some earlier work, stop by and see Dr. Lancaster in the library and tell her what you’re working on. She’s also looking for some students who would like to meet with a mentor in the library to get your work a competitive edge by learning how to do outstanding storytelling and format your entry at the same time. Don’t forget, the top prize is $100 for middle school and $100 for high school! The deadline is March 31.

Superintendent’s Ultimate Readers Awards (SURA) – Want to make your teachers happy? Keep working along toward qualifying for the Superintendent’s Ultimate Readers Awards ceremony. There are 3 ways to qualify: log 40 minutes of reading a day outside of school, read and log 15 books, or complete your AR goals at 85% correct. And, now that you’re on track to come to the ceremony, don’t forget the great Dolphin Research Center incentive awards. DRC knows the importance of reading to success in life so they want to encourage all students to read by offering fun prizes for you and your family to enjoy at DRC. Remember that everyone who qualifies for SURA automatically qualifies for a chance at the DRC prize drawing. Once you’ve qualified for SURA, all you have to do to be in the drawing is to get a permission form from your ELA teacher signed by your parents and turned in so the Dolphin Research Center can use your picture or video for DRC publicity. Monroe County Schools also is giving away one Kindle Fire to a middle school student and one to high school. To qualify for that Bonus Drawing you need to have earned 100 AR points at 85% correct. The deadline for reading is March 31. All documentation is due to your ELA teacher by April 15.

Teens Read and Sunshine State Young Readers Awards—Now if you’re still going to be hungry after the nice snacks from SURA and thoughts of a fun day at DRC, reading five books in your grade level category from Teens Read for high school and Sunshine State Young Readers Awards for middle school qualifies you to come to a donut party in the library. How’s that for a good nutritional snack?  The deadline for qualifying for the Teens Read and Sunshine State Young Readers Awards snack party is March 31.

Do you need some help in Math in Middle School or High School Math??  There are Math tutors available after school on Thursdays in Ms. Joshua’s room 2301.  Make sure you bring something to work on.
Ms. Williams is looking for donations of young adult books in new or like new condition.  If you have any that you would like to donate, please drop them off in the office marked with Ms. Williams name.

Attention Parents & Students:  Ms. Belotti is collecting new or gently used prom attire to be shared with kids who need some help dressing for the prom.  If you have prom donations, please give directly to Ms. Belotti as she will setting up a display of prom attire (dresses, shoes and suits) near the Success Center.

Class Dues
Junior Dues are $50.00
Class dues are $50 and are a school requirement.  Juniors (and Seniors) who don’t pay their dues may not participate in events such as prom, field trips, or even graduation.  Juniors can bring their $50 to Ms. Maresma or Julissa Herrada.
Senior Dues are $100
